De Ruijter is one of the oldest most authentic Dutch companies that has been producing original Dutch products successfully. The company started in 1860 in the Brinkstreet in Baarn, by producing "Birth Mice". The original owner Cornelis Rutgerus De Ruijter was 24 years old back then and opened a bakery. He had learned the profession at a Utrecht bakery where he worked before. There he also learned the preparation of the Birth Mice, which are little anis seeds with many small layers of coating sugar around it, creating little balls. These were eaten when a baby was born. The little mice were very popular amongst the locals. Shortly after the first alternative was made by some elder ladies, who came to the idea of grinding the little balls into a powder. The stamped mice was officially born and is still one of the most sold original De Ruijter products.
